Layering rugs has been around for yonks but thanks to the likes of popular interior designers the trend has been picking up steam and is becoming increasingly popular. We predict layering is a hot trend for 2021 and we will tell you how to do it right!
Layering your rugs isn't just a trend. Stylists have been using this trick for years to help clearly define certain areas of a room and add visual interest to spaces. From a visual perspective, layering creates some opportunity to add depth and texture. Adding a bolder or patterned rug on top of a subtle large rug creates a beautiful contrasted look. Alternatively you can also mix two patterned rugs together to create a bold and striking look.
Perhaps you've spotted an incredible vintage rug at a flea market. You love it but it will be too small for your living room. Layering is the answer! You can still use your stunning vintage find but it won't look wrong or out of place because the rug below it is the correct size for the space. The end result is a room that looks purposely and intentionally put together. In order to effectively layer your rugs you HAVE to get the sizing right. Typically layering comprises of one large dominant 'base' rug and a smaller accent rug is placed on top for interest.
You've found the perfect rug but your budget doesn't stretch to get the large size you'd like.. You can still buy the rug! Buy your high end/expensive rug in the smallest size and layer it on top of a large inexpensive rug. Typically Jute rugs are used for this very purpose. The end result is budget friendly and you still get the rug you love.
If you're anything like me and don't like to follow rules... DONT. Mix the colours and patterns and have some fun. At the end of the day this is your home and it should feel like you.
